Rackpace.com Cloud Server – CentOS 5.5 64bit install and setup
Virtual cloud server hosting services make it alot easier to test new server installations and setups. I created a new Rackpace.com Cloud server 4GB/160GB disk instance powered by single Quad-Core AMD Opteron Processor 2374 HE with CentOS 5.5 64bit linux operating system to migrate and test my custom bash shell installation scripts. I use these bash shell install scripts to be able to replicate my local virtualized CentOS 5.5 64bit Virtualbox testing environment used for Apache/Varnish vs Litespeed web server/Litespeed cache tests.
I have cloud server hosting accounts with various providers, so will be doing tests with them as well. They currently include accounts with Amazon EC2, Rackspace Cloud server, and GoGrid.com Cloud hosting. Later will add Gigenet Cloud server hosting services too. For the below quick install and setup tests on Rackpace.com Cloud server 4GB/160GB disk instance it only cost me a total of US$0.65 and used ~0.30GB in and ~0.01GB out bandwidth!
The purpose is to have the following base software installed and configured as follows before adding Varnish, Litespeed etc:
- Apache 2.2.17 (custom built rpm binary for CentOS 5.5 64bit)
- MariaDB 5.2.5 MySQL 64bit rpm binaries with custom tweaked my.cnf and phpmyadmin installed and configured
- PHP 5.3.6 (compiled from source as mod_php) with Xcache v1.3.1 and Memcache 3.0.5 compiled from source
- 2x Memcached v1.4.5 servers compiled from source on port 11211 and 11212 with memcache.php, and phpmemcache installed and configured
